López Obrador accuses the United States of lobbying against his electricity reform

In his daily press conference, the Mexican president affirmed that there were foreign governments that were lobbying against the initiative and, when questioned by a journalist about which ones, pointed to Washington.

“The government of the United States, I know, has come to that, to ask us that they do not agree, to insinuate that the treaty is being violated, when it is not true,” he said, referring to the current trade agreement with Canada and neighboring from the north, T-MEC.

The president denounced that “there are meetings of the opponents with officials of the United States government.” In the past week John KerryPresident Joe Biden’s Special Envoy for Climate, met with Mexican officials to discuss the legislative project.

On the same day, the United States trade representative, Katherine Tai, warned in a letter to the Mexican economy secretary, Tatiana Clouthier, that Washington is concerned about López Obrador’s energy policy and warned that 10,000 million dollars in investments from his country, especially in renewable energy, are “more at risk than ever”.

In the letter, the content of which was disclosed this week on social networks and confirmed to Reuters by a US official, Tai also warned that will consider “all options available under the T-MEC to address these concerns.”

The president has intensified this week his attacks on critics of the electricity reform, after the opposition parties PRI, PAN and PRD announced that they will not give their vote to the government alliance led by the Morena group so that it achieves the two thirds necessary to approve it.
