The deep well in the Zelletau, which has now been connected to the public supply network, supplies Freistadt households with the best drinking water from a depth of up to 210 meters. The water, which is around 70 years old, gushes out of the depths of the Mühlviertel granite at three liters per second. With this capacity, you could almost fill the large pool in the indoor pool in a single day. For the supply in the city, this means that water is available for around 2,000 additional people.
“With the new spring, we are securing our water supply for many years to come,” said Mayor Christian Gratzl during a visit by Freistadt’s municipal politicians to the fountain’s deacidification system. Since the first test drilling almost five years ago, the city has been working flat out on the development, Gratzl thanked the Freistadt water masters, the team from the construction department, the civil engineering office Thürriedl & Mayr, the landowners who were affected by the water pipe construction and to all companies involved in the implementation of this major project.
1.6 kilometers of lines laid
“With the deep well in the Zelletau, our water supply now has a third mainstay. The new spring relieves our wells in the Galgenau,” explains water master Alfred Zeilinger. Before the water is fed into the elevated tank in Schlag, it has to be treated, otherwise the carbonic acid in the well water would damage the pipes. A new deacidification system was built for this purpose. However, the greatest structural effort of this multi-year project was the laying of a 1.6 km long water pipe from the Zelletau to Schlag.
“The main task of the municipality is to ensure water of the best quality, sufficient quantity, affordable and crisis-proof for the people of the city,” emphasizes City Councilor for Infrastructure Rainer Widmann. That’s why they are already working on the next big step for a safe water supply: “We are planning another elevated tank in the area of the ski lift so that we never run out of good Freistadt water!”
