Jackson will take office at the end of the Supreme Court’s current term, sometime in June or July, when liberal Justice Stephen Breyer resigns.

The landing of the first black woman will not, however, alter the conservative majority of the highest court (6 to 3), consolidated during the Trump administration.

“This is a wonderful day, a joyous day, an inspiring day for the Senate, for the Supreme Court, and for the United States of America,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. “This is one of the great moments in American history,” she stressed.

The Republican leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnellunsuccessfully fought to thwart Jackson’s nomination in recent weeks, NBC News recalled.

McConnell and other Republicans have criticized Jackson, a Washington Court of Appeals judge, for not embracing “originalism,” a narrow constitutional interpretation framework popular in conservative legal and activist circles.
