The Boeing 757 parcel service DHL machine had hydraulic problems, as Costa Rica’s fire chief, Héctor Chaves, announced on Thursday in a video message from on site at Juan Santamaría Airport in San José. Both people on board, the pilot and the co-pilot, were unharmed.

After landing, videos showed the plane going down the runway, then making a right turn, kicking up dust and coming to rest in a depression next to the runway with a break near the tail. The fire brigade used foam to prevent a fire.

According to a report in the newspaper “La Nación”, the plane took off from the same airport in the direction of Guatemala City, but had to turn back. Accordingly, the pilot had reported an emergency in the air. Operations at the airport were interrupted for several hours.
