Accompanying traffic concept for new Danube bridge commissioned

A demand that Lower Austria’s neighboring communities in particular have vehemently raised since the presentation of the routes for the connection of the planned new Danube bridge in Mauthausen is now being met: A joint traffic concept is to explore how strengthening public transport can help to reduce commuter traffic jams on the access roads to the new bridge and to improve the climate balance of the region. The federal states of Upper and Lower Austria have agreed on the implementation of this traffic concept with the municipalities of Enns, Ennsdorf, St. Valentin, St. Pantaleon-Erla and Mauthausen.

In addition to optimizing local public transport with a focus on the “last mile”, operational mobility management in the region should also play an important role in the development of the concept. “Here we see a high potential for relocation in comprehensive information for employees and individual measures by companies,” said Lower Austria’s Mobility Provincial Councilor Ludwig Schleritzko (VP) yesterday. Appropriate measures range from job tickets to company bicycles and the construction of bicycle parking spaces to the optimization of the company’s vehicle pool. Bicycle traffic is also a focus of the project.

“The project is intended to help the regions of Perg and Amstetten to think together and network beyond the new Danube bridge project,” says Upper Austria’s Infrastructure Provincial Councilor Günther Steinkellner (FP) summarizing the intentions of the traffic concept. The office “regionalis” from Graz and the Viennese mobility consulting company “Herry Consult” were commissioned with the elaboration. They are to present a final project report on the traffic concept in March 2023. The municipalities involved bear 50 percent of the costs, with Upper Austria and Lower Austria covering the remaining 50 percent.
