Peak winds of 75 km/h were measured in Rohrbach on Friday morning. It is the effects of a cold front that reached Upper Austria on Thursday evening with wind and rain in its luggage. Responsible is a storm that moves from the North Sea over Denmark to the northeast. Occasionally, the fire brigade had to move out to storm operations, for example in the districts of Urfahr and Gmunden. Traffic routes had to be secured and minor storm damage repaired.
Next cold front approaching
It will probably not be the only storm action in the coming days, because the next cold front is already approaching. “The weekend will be rather uncomfortable,” says meteorologist Michael Butschek from the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) on the OÖN telephone. Ein storm depression with core just north of Austria moves through the night to Saturday from west to east. The associated cold front, which is likely to reach Upper Austria early on Saturday morning, brings not only heavy precipitation but also an increased storm potential.
Up to 80 km/h wind on Saturday
The ZAMG has therefore issued a storm warning for Saturday. It applies to the entire state. Wind peaks between 60 and 80 km/h are to be expected, and even more on the mountains. Walks in forests and parks are not recommended, loose objects in gardens or on balconies should be secured. Motorists are called upon to be particularly careful on bridges and exposed streets.
Snow limit drops to 400 meters
In addition, the temperatures continue to drop, the maximum values remain in the single digits. “Five to a maximum of nine degrees is the end of the road,” says Butschek. The snow line is falling rapidly and is between 600 and 800 on Saturday and only between on Sunday morning 400 and 700 meters. “In the higher areas of the Mühlviertel, in the southern mountains and in the Salzkammergut, the meadows can be sweetened,” says Butschek. To speak of a “last greeting of winter” is still an exaggeration. “The snow will not stay and it will probably stay green in the central area,” says the meteorologist.
Are you spending Saturday at home? Here’s how to pass the time:
Temperature jump at the beginning of the week
After a “mixed” Sunday with a mixture of rain showers, clouds and sunny spells, the temperatures are going up again at the beginning of the week – from minus two degrees on Sunday morning to up to 20 degrees on Tuesday afternoon. “As fast as the values have fallen, they will rise again,” predicts Butschek. The sun should also venture out from behind the clouds again. Monday stays dry, the wind dies down. On Tuesday it will be consistently sunny, with a moderate easterly wind blowing at peak speeds of up to 30 km/h.
Easter “rather on the mild side”
A forecast for the Easter weekend is still premature, says Butschek. From today’s perspective, however, this should be “rather on the mild side”. A widespread onset of winter is not to be expected, at least in the coming days.
