The Congress of Peru urged Pedro Castillo to resign

It is a call for resignation, which expresses the parliament’s wish for the president to resign, but it is not binding, that is, it does not force Pedro Castillo to resign. It is a political gesture with more symbolic value than real effecthighlighted the portal of the Lima newspaper La República.

The motion was voted on 10 days after radical right-wing opponents in Congress failed in their attempt to remove Castillo from office in a lightning impeachment trial, getting only 55 votes out of the 87 needed.

The motions of “presidential vacancy” have become customary in Peru and caused the fall of the presidents Peter Paul Kuczynski (right) in 2018 and Martin Vizcarra (center) in 2020. Since December 2017, Congress has debated six such initiatives.

Political tension is growing in Peru, which seems to be headed for a new crisis.
