“We want to know exactly where in the city trees would be needed as shade or climate regulators, where trees can be planted and which ones would be suitable there,” says Steyr’s environmental councilor Katrin Auer (SP). This digital tree register, developed by the magistrate, should be ready by autumn at the latest and give further impetus to the “1000 trees for Steyr” climate campaign supported by OÖN.
Auer herself has also volunteered as a tree sponsor: she donated a small-leaved lime tree for the Reithoffer area. Hotelier Hans Mader planted a sycamore maple in the immediate vicinity, Michael Zechner planted a honeysuckle tree, and the Schlögl family contributed an English oak. “Trees have a very special meaning for us,” says Daniela Schlögl, who studies druidism with her family.
Everything to do with climate protection is also an issue in the BRG Steyr, where Vice Mayor Anna-Maria Demmelmayr planted a spherical acacia for the graduate association on Michaelerplatz: “We want to make our contribution to beautifying the forecourt of the museum and making it visible to the students be.” A campaign that naturally also pleases BRG Director Gerald Bachmayr: “The school is growing, a tree is growing, the knowledge of the students is growing. And sustainability has been a concern of ours for a long time.” Everything fits together.
Initiator Leopold Födermayr is still hoping for numerous new tree sponsors: “It would be nice if every grandfather would plant a tree in the city for his grandchildren and their future.” He also makes an appeal to all Steyr companies: “Wherever there are sealed areas, they should be loosened up with trees.”
