Only 12,504 new infections, but 40 deaths

It was less this year only at the beginning of January. The number of dead was very high again, 40 alone have been registered since Friday. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 16,208 people infected with SARS-CoV-2 have died in Austria. There were declines in hospital patients. There were fewer new infections on January 8th with 7,407 cases – but with significantly more tests. On the following Saturday, January 15, there were 16,749, twice as many within 24 hours.

The average for the past seven days also fell further on Saturday to 14,757. There were 202,812 laboratory-confirmed active cases across Austria, 16,205 fewer than the day before. The federal state with the highest seven-day incidence is currently Lower Austria with 1,405.7, followed by Vienna with 1,391.9, Vorarlberg with 1,297.5 and Burgenland with 1252.9. It is followed by Upper Austria (1,118), Carinthia (951.4), Salzburg (902.4), Styria (888.2) and Tyrol (678).

208 people in intensive care

2,528 Covid 19 patients had to be cared for in the hospital on Saturday, 70 fewer than on Friday. 208 people are being treated in intensive care units, five more than the day before. Within the past week, the number of seriously ill people has fallen by 17.

The 12,504 new infections came out of 382,974 meaningful PCR tests, the positive rate was 3.3 percent. On average, not even 300,000 precise PCR analyzes were carried out every day in the past week with 298,897, the positive rate was 4.9 percent. However, there are clear differences in your individual federal states. For example, Carinthia recorded a positive rate of 40.9 percent in the past 24 hours, only 267 PCR tests per 100,000 inhabitants were carried out here. The Austrian average since Friday was 4,265 PCR analyzes per 100,000 inhabitants.

Very high positive rate in relation to the tests

The positive rate was also very high in Upper Austria due to the low number of tests, at 30.47. Only 432 PCR analyzes were carried out in the past 24 hours per 100,000 inhabitants. In Vorarlberg there were only 514, the positive rate was 28.5 percent in the westernmost state.

Since the beginning of the pandemic there have already been 3,976,750 confirmed cases in Austria. 3,757,730 people are considered recovered. The number of deaths is very high, 251 Covid-19 deaths were registered in the past week alone. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 180.5 people per 100,000 inhabitants have died from or with Covid-19.

On Friday, 4,769 corona vaccinations were administered across Austria. Of these, only 236 were first stitches. According to the data from the e-vaccination card, a total of 6,818,162 people have already received at least one vaccination. Exactly 6,185,000 people and thus 68.9 percent of Austrians have valid vaccination protection. 18,721 vaccination certificates have expired in the past week.
