Schönborn: “Ukraine needs solidarity”

On Palm Sunday, Cardinal Christoph Schönborn traditionally blesses the palm branches and appears in the ORF press hour. The focus was on Ukraine: Schönborn called for full solidarity with the country attacked by Russia. More about this in the video:

Ukraine is in self-defense and has to defend itself with the support of the West. In retrospect, it is incredible that the free world did not react more strongly after the annexation of Crimea in 2014, the cardinal criticized. It is tragic that weapons have to be delivered to stop the Russian war of aggression. He couldn’t judge whether there was another way. He welcomes any peace initiative.

Mood can change

“There must be no neutrality towards distress,” said Schönborn, referring to Austria. He called for solidarity with the refugees and drew comparisons to the situation in 2015. Basically, all refugees are people, according to the cardinal. At that time, many young men came, now it is mainly women with children. “It’s a different situation,” said Schönborn. He hopes that the wave of refugees will not be as big as in 2015, that the mood will change. Schönborn wants to maintain his willingness to talk to the Russian Orthodox Church, which supports Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. Even if this has not been successful so far.

The Archbishop of Vienna was very upset about the constant nagging of the Austrians about the Corona measures. It is not the government that is zigzagging, but the virus. The Austrians should be aware of how good they are.
