The images of war and destruction left their mark on the children of the Arnreit elementary school. Out of dismay at the plight in Ukraine, VS Arnreit organized a charity run last week to collect donations for people in Ukraine affected by the war. The children looked for sponsors in their families and relatives as well as in the neighborhood. These donors in turn indicated how much money they would be willing to make available for each lap completed on the old Arnreiter sports field.
On the Friday before the Easter holidays, the starting gun for this project was fired at 9 a.m. sharp. The 30-minute run of the 65 children, who also expressed their solidarity with the colors blue and yellow on self-made headbands, buttons, bracelets and face painting, began with the vocal support of the numerous spectators who had appeared. Arnreit’s experienced stadium announcer, Martin Lang, brought additional motivation to the pitch with his comments. After completing each round, the participating children were allowed to draw a line on their class posters. At the end of the run, the record was 25 laps.
As a little refreshment in between, all participants were given a nutritious muesli bar. At the end of the event, the children were able to earn no less than €13,497.50 with their sporting commitment and the support of sponsors. “An unbelievable sum that we would not have expected in our wildest dreams,” says elementary school teacher Manfred Lindorfer. The donation amount will now be transferred to the donation account of neighbors in need.
