For the first time since January, fewer than 10,000 new infections

For the first time in around three months, fewer than 10,000 positive tests were reported on Monday, compared to 7,405 on January 8th. Hospital occupancy rose by two occupied beds to 2,497, but fell by 473 people within a week. 16 more Covid deaths mean 16,242 victims since the pandemic began, according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior and Health.

The average of daily new cases in the past week fell to 13,680 cases and the seven-day incidence to 1,066 per 100,000 population. Since the beginning of the pandemic there have been almost four million confirmed infections in Austria, there were 3,995,418 by Monday (as of 9.30 a.m.), with an expected high number of unreported cases.

So far, 3,799,939 people have survived an infection, and within the past 24 hours 20,823 were considered virus-free again. In the past seven days alone, 240 other people in the country have died from or with the corona virus. As of Monday there were 179,237 active cases in Austria, 12,806 fewer than the day before.

206 of a total of 2,497 hospital patients received intensive care at the start of the week. That number has increased by 15 seriously ill patients since Sunday and fell by 20 patients in a week.

The low number of new infections was offset by a low number of tests over the past 24 hours, which is usual for Monday. 91,634 PCR tests were registered, the daily average for the past week was around 280,000. The positive rate from Sunday to Monday was 8.8 percent, that of the previous week 4.9 percent.

The number of vaccinations was also low. 508 stitches were performed on Sunday, fewer than since the start of administration around the turn of the year 2020/21. Of these, only 25 were first bites as well as 67 second and 416 third vaccinations. According to the data from the e-vaccination card, a total of 6,818,418 people received at least one vaccination. 6,176,509 people and thus 68.8 percent of the population have valid vaccinations. However, almost 20,000 people expired their vaccination certificate in the previous week without a required refresher.
