The president recalled on Monday that during that reserved meeting Putin “defended the sovereignty of Brazil in relation to the Amazon.”
While Putin supports Brasilia’s position, “other countries like France, the United Kingdom and the United States relativize our sovereignty over the Amazon,” he compared.

“Putin with his veto power (in the UN Security Council) said that the Amazon belongs to the Brazilians and that discussion (on sovereignty) did not continuepeople from outside have their sights set on the region that is larger than Western Europe,” Bolsonaro stressed.
The Brazilian president’s remarks are in line with other laudatory remarks about Putin made by Bolsonaro since he traveled to Moscow.
The ultra-conservative former military man has declared himself “neutral” in the face of the Russian offensive against Ukraine and rejected an invitation to visit kyiv formulated by the president’s government Volodymyr Zelenskywhom he described as a “comedian”.
Last week Brazil abstained in the UN Assembly on a US motion for Russia to be suspended from the UN Human Rights Council.
In another section of his statements on Monday, Bolsonaro referred to the import of Russian potassium used as fertilizer.
“When I was in Russia, at the beginning of the year, I spoke with President Putin before the invasion of Ukraine, about something that our people are very interested in, the continuity of the flow of potassium supply, that was guaranteed, we hope that continue that guarantee for the good of our businesses here,” Bolsonaro said.
