“We have already dismantled the quarters. The decision was made by the state of Upper Austria,” confirms press spokesman Christian Hartl of the OÖN request.
Despite the short time, district rescue commander Alfred Heinz draws a positive balance. “The state’s decision is probably due to the fact that the number of occupants has fallen significantly in recent weeks. You don’t need to look after three emergency quarters if one or two are enough. And of course the cost factor also plays a role. Our quarters in Wels were for Designed for 320 to 350 people. The maximum level of support was around 180 people, we could have done better, but that wasn’t necessary.”
15 to 20 helpers were on duty every day: cooks, interpreters, support staff, the crisis intervention team. During the night, six to eight Red Cross employees were assigned to take care of them. With a field kitchen, the Ukrainians were supplied with food and drink practically around the clock. “The interaction between the Red Cross, the fire brigade, various service clubs and the police really worked perfectly. The cohesion was great, and the willingness to donate among the population was enormous,” says Andreas Heinz.
95 percent women and children
95 percent of the arriving refugees from Ukraine were women and children. “It was nice to see how the refugees calmed down again within a short time. The children’s play area with badminton, Wuzelt tables and other play equipment was at least able to distract the children who had fled a little. They could be children again,” says District rescue commander Andreas Heinz.
Last weekend, the quarter was already dismantled with many hard-working helpers. “I would like to thank the Red Cross for the exemplary handling of the emergency accommodation. All arriving people from Ukraine were well looked after and were able to continue their journey after a short time or be accommodated in an apartment in the area,” said Wels Deputy Mayor Gerhard Kroiss (FP).
The registration office of the immigration police is currently still located on the exhibition grounds, but will be relocated to Dragonerstraße 29 (entrance between the tax office and the police) from Maundy Thursday, April 14th. From this date, all new registrations must be announced there.
