In view of the Ukraine war, members of the Tyrolean state government, among others, felt that Hannibal’s elaborate portrayal of Hannibal’s crossing of the Alps was inappropriate, according to a report by ORF Tyrol. The organizers still want to hold on to the event.
“Particularly tasteless”
Governor Günther Platter (ÖVP) was skeptical. He can understand the criticism and have also informed the organizers – tourism association, mountain railways and Red Bull. You have to think about whether the event is up to date. His deputy, Ingrid Felipe (Greens), found this year’s performance to be “particularly tasteless”. Only a few hundred kilometers away, people are fleeing an invasion, while one is being reenacted in the Tyrolean mountains. Even the mayor of Sölden, Ernst Schöpf, was not able to gain much from this year’s event. He advised three weeks ago to cancel the event.
“No Glorification of War”
According to ORF, Jack Falkner, managing director of Bergbahnen Sölden, didn’t want to know anything about it. Linking the event to the war in Ukraine is “far-fetched” for him. There is good feedback from the international media. Although there was a discussion in the tourism association as to whether it would be carried out, they stand behind it. The event is already being advertised intensively, said the managing director of Ötztal Tourismus, Oliver Schwarz. After all, it is not about glorifying war, but about a cultural event.
