The arrests are unprecedented in the last 30 years in El Salvador, a country besieged by the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and Neighborhood 18among others, which add up to 70,000 members in the country, of which now more than 26,000 would be in jail.

The offensive deployed by Bukele must not only confront organized crime but also criticism from the US government of the Democrat joe Biden. On Monday, Bukele assured that the administration of donald Trump in the United States (2017-2021) he did support him in his fight against gangs, unlike Biden’s.

Secretary of State, Anthony Blinkenhad expressed on Sunday his “concern” about the wave of violence caused by the gangs, as well as about the reforms promoted by Bukele that “criminalize” the work of the press.

On March 26, Bukele declared “war” on the gangs that operate in his territory, mainly the Mara Salvatrucha and Barrio 18, after the escalation of violence.

At his request, Congress, controlled by the ruling party, decreed an emergency regime on March 27, which allows arrests without a court order, and laws were reformed to punish those who belong to gangs with up to 45 years in prison.

The reform also includes punishing the dissemination of gang messages in the media with up to 15 years in prison.
