López Obrador rebukes the UN for the report on disappearances in Mexico

“No international organization is going to put us in the dock if we are acting legally, with humanism, if we do not allow corruption, impunity,” the president said in his usual daily conference.

López Obrador also responded in this way to the call made in its report by the UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances to demilitarize security tasks in Mexico.

“They (the UN delegates) do not have, with all due respect, all the information, they are not acting in accordance with the truth, It is no longer the time before when the Army was used to repress or finish off woundedLopez Obrador said.

The United Nations analysis is the product of the Committee’s visit to Mexico from November 15 to 26.

In his conclusions, he called on the Mexican government to take “immediate measures” to put an end to “the alarming upward trend in forced disappearances,” including of minors.

“Organized crime has become the main culprit in disappearances in Mexico, with various degrees of participation, acquiescence or omission of public servants“said the UN.

Said “human tragedy” is fueled by a “absolute impunity“of the kidnappers, added the Committee.

The National Registry of Disappeared of Mexico reports until this Wednesday 98,947 missing persons.

The UN Committee stressed that “official figures show a notable increase in the disappearance of girls and young boys from the age of 12, as well as adolescents and women.”

López Obrador assured that the government is “working” on these cases.

The disappearances began in Mexico with the so-called “dirty war” waged by the authorities against the revolutionary movements of the 1960s-1980s.

Their number skyrocketed starting in the 2000s, with the increase in drug trafficker activity in Mexico and the war that the former president Felipe Calderon (2006-2012) declared the cartels at the beginning of his government.
