“Putin’s man in Ukraine” arrested

The oligarch Viktor Medvedchuk, considered “Putin’s man in Ukraine” and who went into hiding after the start of the Russian war of aggression, has been arrested by the SBU secret service. The 67-year-old was arrested while he was trying to flee, dressed in a Ukrainian army camouflage uniform.

That’s what it said in a video message from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In his address, the President scoffed at Moscow’s claims that Russia’s war crimes incidents in Ukraine were “staged” by Kyiv. Then he cited the arrest of the politician as evidence of unstaged Ukrainian successes. Zelenskyj described it as “particularly cynical” that the arrested man wore an army uniform: “What a warrior, what a patriot.” Because he was wearing a uniform, he had to be treated under martial law. Selenskyj now wants to exchange him “for our boys and girls,” for Ukrainian prisoners of war in Russian hands.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev reacted angrily. “Some freaks calling themselves the ‘Ukrainian government’ say they want to beat a confession out of Viktor Medvedchuk, sentence him ‘quickly and fairly’ and then exchange them for prisoners.”
