In his homily at St. Peter’s Basilica, the pontiff focused on what he considered three risky behaviors or “spaces of hidden idolatry” in which “the devil gets into us.”
“A space of hidden idolatry opens up where there is spiritual worldliness, which is a proposal for life, it is a culture, a culture of the ephemeral, a culture of appearance, of makeup,” the Pope said in the first place.
“Another space of hidden idolatry takes root where the pragmatism of numbers is given primacy,” Jorge Bergoglio later added before almost 2,000 priests.
For the Pope, “those who have this hidden idol are recognized for their love of statistics, those that can erase any personal trait in the discussion and give pre-eminence to the majority that, ultimately, become the criterion of discernment” .
“This cannot be the only way of proceeding or the only criterion in the Church of Christ. People cannot be numbered, and God does not give the Spirit with measure,” he asserted in front of priests, bishops and cardinals from all over the world.
According to Francis, “in this fascination with numbers, in reality, we look for ourselves and take pleasure in the control that this logic gives us, which has no faces and is not that of love.”
Finally, the Pope considered that “a third space of hidden idolatry, twinned with the previous one, is the one that opens with functionalism, a seductive area in which many, more than with the route, are enthusiastic about the road map” .
“A worldly priest is nothing other than a clericalized pagan,” the Pope warned.
This morning’s Mass marks the beginning of the celebrations of what the Catholic tradition considers the Easter Triduum.
In the afternoon, Francis will wash the feet of 12 detainees in a prison outside Rome, in his sixth visit to a detention center for Holy Thursday since his enthronement in 2013.
Tomorrow, the Pope will celebrate the so-called Passion in Saint Peter’s Basilica and, later, he will lead the traditional Via Crucis in the Roman Colosseum, after two years of celebrations without an audience in Saint Peter’s Square due to the pandemic.
On Saturday, meanwhile, Bergoglio will be in charge of the Easter Vigil and on Sunday, after the Mass of the so-called Resurrection Day, he will give his Urbi et Orbi message from the Vatican Basilica, in which, as usual, he will cover different problems global.
