Magical night: Oliver Glasner creates the big sensation in Barcelona with Frankfurt

Unbelievable: Driven on by tens of thousands of fans who had traveled with them, Eintracht Frankfurt created the big sensation in the Europa League quarter-finals after a 1-1 draw at home in the “Camp Nou” stadium. The team of Innviertel coach Oliver Glasner, who is assisted by the two Upper Austrians Michi Angerschmid and Ronny Brunmayr, won 3-2 on Thursday evening in the almost sold-out Nou Camp in Barcelona.

The Frankfurters laid the foundation for the surprise in the fourth minute with a penalty goal by Filip Kostic. Driven by the fans who had traveled with them, and who created a home game atmosphere with their volume and passion, the Frankfurters followed suit. In the 36th minute, Rafael Borre hammered the ball into the goal with a fantastic long-range shot to take the lead 2-0. The favorite from Barcelona didn’t really find their way into the game. In the second half, too, the guests from Frankfurt repeatedly came dangerously in front of the Spaniards’ goal. In the 67th it was Kostic again, who made the preliminary decision 3-0. The Austrian Martin Hinteregger played through in defense for the Frankfurt team. In the 84th minute, the Catalans were denied a goal by the video referee for being offside.

Barcelona’s comeback came too late

Sergio Busquet’s goal to make it 3-1 in the 90th minute in front of around 80,000 spectators counted, but came too late for Barcelona. After Memphis Depay’s penalty to make it 2-3, the referee called off the game. The Frankfurters were euphorically celebrated after the game by probably more than 20,000 of their own fans in the stadium.

Semi-final vs West Ham United

In the semi-finals, Frankfurt now meets the English club West Ham United. The first leg will take place on April 28 (9 p.m.) in London, and a week later the second leg will take place in Frankfurt on May 5 (9 p.m.).

For Glasner (47), record player at SV Ried, it was probably the greatest success of the previous, very successful, coaching career with stations at SV Ried, LASK and Wolfsburg. In the summer of 2021 he moved to Frankfurt from VfL Wolfsburg, which he had previously led to the Champions League.
