Since March 26, a family of four from war-torn Ukraine has found quiet, peaceful accommodation in the Weyregg vicarage. A few days after their arrival, a mother with two children in the neighborhood was also taken in by the Gottesberger family.
The pastor responsible, Janusz Zaba, who comes from the southern Polish village of Brusnik and experienced a lot during the period of communist rule, answered the question as to why he had taken in refugees: “In the 1980s, many Poles had to do that because of martial law left the country, many of them found refuge in Austria and even in Weyregg. As a convinced Christian, as a Polish citizen and as a neighbor of the Ukraine, it was natural for me to open the doors of the vicarage.”
Both Ukrainian families are extremely grateful that the local population welcomed them with such warmth and helpfulness, reports Doris Feichtinger, who is responsible for public relations at the parish of Weyregg. “This and their deep faith will help them get through this difficult time.” One of the families summed up their current mood: “We prefer to hear the church bells than the rockets and bombs falling.”
The Easter penitential celebration in the Weyregger parish church this year had the topic “Peace”. Feichtinger: “The burning candles on the word ‘peace’ give the families hope that they will soon be able to return home and hug their loved ones.”
