The “Blossoming Linz” competition is entering the next round – and comes up with innovations.
In addition to the usual categories “house garden”, “window and balcony” and “public space” there is also a rating for the first time this year in the area of ”roof garden and facade greening”.
The reason? The great climatic effectiveness of such roof and facade greening. In addition to tree planting, these would be among the most effective means of reducing and avoiding heat islands in the city, it said at yesterday’s press conference.
It was important for Environmental Councilor Eva Schobesberger (Greens) to emphasize: “Even the smallest garden offers unimagined possibilities. Even with a little box on the windowsill you can make a contribution to reviving our city ecology and biodiversity.” This year, too, the theme “City garden to taste” is still the focus. “Gardening is particularly popular with young people, also because many want to harvest something themselves,” says organic gardener Karl Ploberger, who heads the competition’s expert jury.
Enthusiastic gardeners (any interested person from Linz can take part) can take part in the campaign until July 31st. The ten best submissions in each category will receive non-cash prizes (plant vouchers from the city nursery, annual ticket for the botanical garden, etc.). The first prize in each category is a one-day garden trip.
