Christine Nöstlinger’s “Tales of Franz”, told in 19 volumes between 1984 and 2011, has accompanied millions of children and adults. From today, Friday, he experiences his first cinema adventure. The most popular works of Nöstlinger

The writer, who died in 2018, was one of the most influential children’s book authors in the German-speaking world – and beyond. The Astrid Lindgren Prize winner has published more than 100 books. We show the most popular works by Christine Nöstlinger:

1. The fiery red Friederike (1970)

Friederike lives with Anna’s aunt. She has a cat called Kater and red hair. Fire red, the children say and laugh at Friederike. They shout: ‘Here comes fiery red Friederike! Fire! Fire! Her head is on fire!’ That makes Friederike sad. But because her hair is no ordinary red hair, very unusual things soon start to happen…

2. We whistle on the cucumber king (1972)

The Kumi-Ori is a disgustingly authoritarian Cellar King, mean and devious. The Hogelmann family knows a thing or two about it. His outraged subjects overthrew him from his shaky royal throne and now he’s sitting there on the kitchen table begging the Hogelmanns for political asylum. A huge row breaks out in the family of six and a lot has to happen before peace and quiet return.

3. May beetle fly! (1973)

In her autobiographical novel “Maikäfer, fly! My father, the end of the war, Cohn and I”, published in 1973, Christine Nöstlinger describes her own childhood experiences in bombed Vienna in 1945.

4. Konrad or The Child from the Tin Can (1975)

No child can be that good! Mrs. Bartolotti doesn’t have much to do with children. That’s why she was amazed when she received a son in the mail: Konrad. Konrad is really delivered in a can! He’s terribly neat and near-perfect, and Ms. Bartolotti is very messy. So the two have to get used to each other. But then Frau Bartolotti falls in love with him so much that she never wants to give him back – even if the creepy people from the cannery are already looking for him.

5. Rosa Riedl Guardian Ghost (1979)

Anastasia, called Nasti, is afraid of everything and everyone. Afraid of the basement, afraid of dogs, afraid of being alone in the apartment. She unexpectedly gets help from a courageous, lovable ghost. Although Rosa Riedl died in the war, she intervened energetically in Nasti’s life. This ensures plenty of excitement and a lot of comedy, because of course certain spooky occurrences do not remain hidden from Nasti’s surroundings.

6. Gretchen Sackmeier (1981)

The Sackmeier family: Gretchen, five feet tall and sixty-four kilos; Mother Sackmeier with the “hide the bacon trick” where she pulls her long sweater down her hips a hundred times a day; Father Sackmeier, who releases parts of his sagging stomach between shirt buttons for viewing; Hänschen Sackmeier, who only feels comfortable with the left index finger in the right nostril, and Mädi Sackmeier, who at six years old is still too small for a real tic. A well-rounded family that is very friendly and nice to each other.

7. The exchange child (1982)

This is not how Ewald imagined the student exchange! Instead of the decent Tom, his brother Jasper comes into Ewald’s family and scares everyone with his strange behavior. “Jasper, the devil” doesn’t think much of decency, he eats tons of fries, gambles away his money in slot machines and steals chocolate from the supermarket. And then he falls in love…

8. The “Tales of Franz” series (from 1984)

Events in the life of Franz Fröstl from Vienna are described in nineteen volumes. At the beginning he was still in kindergarten and in the last volume he was nine years old and was in the second grade of elementary school.

9. Anna and the anger (1990)

Anna has a big problem. She gets angry incredibly quickly and terribly often. Much more often and much faster than any other child. And the anger is always huge. When anger attacks Anna, her hair turns into hedgehog spikes, she has to howl, curse, bite and spit. The anger is stronger than Anna. Until grandpa has a great idea.

10. Susi’s Secret Diary/Paul’s Secret Diary (1993)

Susi and Paul used to be best friends. Then Paul moved to another city for two years. After his parents separated, they went to fourth grade together again. But the other kids don’t like Paul. He gets on Susi’s nerves too… Neither of them knows from the other that Susi and Paul ever keep a secret diary. The story of Susi’s and Paul’s friendship has two pages, written from the front in Susi’s diary and read from the back in Paul’s diary.

11. The creepy thing (2009)

Joschi’s sister Mizzi is as brave as Joschi would like to be – unfortunately a pious wish. And although Joschi admires Mizzi a lot, he decides to scare her one night with a ghost he made himself. The plan goes haywire due to a failed spell: In the end, Joschi is left with a “living” baby ghost that he has to hide from the world and also entertain, feed with cobwebs and protect.

12. The “Dani Badger” series (From 2001 onwards)

Many everyday situations happen to the lovable little badger that every child will recognize.
