Familiar sat nav: truck got stuck in the middle of the Kalkalpen National Park

In defiance of prohibition and information signs, the man steered his articulated lorry loaded with 24 tons of chipboard from Unterlaussa near Weyer (Steyr-Land district) over narrow forest roads deep into the heart of the Kalkalpen National Park. His navigation device had suggested the route as the shortest route to Rosenau am Hengstpass.

In a tight bend after a bridge, the rear slipped over the edge of the road and the heavy vehicle got stuck in an inclined position. The driver could neither go forward nor backward. The technical platoon of the Steyr fire brigade, complete with crane, had to move in to salvage the truck.

Comrades from the FF Unterlaussa used the travel time of around one and a half hours to secure the bridge for the 48-tonne crane vehicle using ceiling supports. Finally, the crane lifted the rear of the truck back onto the forest road using rescue straps. Video recordings show the use:

Because language barriers made it impossible to communicate with the chauffeur, two firefighters drove the heavy vehicle back to Unterlaussa. From there, the truck driver could start his journey to Rosenau am Hengstpass, a few kilometers away.

The entire operation of the fire brigade lasted almost eight hours. Incidentally, the location was not unknown: in November 2018, a few hundred meters away, an articulated truck was recovered by the fire brigade in a 12-hour operation.

The Vöcklabruck fire brigade had to move out on a similar mission on Friday. A truck driver had been guided by his navigation system to a forest road on Altmannsberg and got stuck there. The OÖN reported:
