AFP journalists heard two waves of attacks on Sunday and saw multiple fires spreading through residential neighborhoods in the center of the country’s second-largest city, causing roofs to collapse. A representative of the rescue workers told AFP that in addition to the at least five fatalities, 13 were injured.
With around 1.5 million inhabitants, the regional capital Kharkiv is the second largest city in Ukraine and is only around 40 kilometers from the Russian border. The city has been fiercely contested since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. So far, the Russian troops have not managed to capture them. Regional governor Oleh Synyehubov said on Thursday that more than 500 civilians have already been killed in the region.
In the eastern Ukrainian city of Zolote, two people were killed and four others injured in Russian attacks, the responsible regional governor said.
