“There is no difference between heavy and light weapons, Ukraine must receive everything it needs to defend itself,” he added, according to the German news agency DPA.

“We have to do everything we can to prepare for the fact that the war can last for months and even years in the worst case,” the commission representative said.

In parallel, the EC is evaluating more sanctions against Russia, which, this time, will focus on the banking sector and oil.

“We continue to look at the banking sector, in particular Sberbank, which alone accounts for 37% of the Russian banking sector” and “of course energy,” Von der Leyen explained.

“The primary objective is to reduce the income of (Russian President Vladimir) Putin, but oil is traded globally, so we are developing smart mechanisms so that oil can also be included in the next sanctions,” he anticipated.

Today the sanction of admission of Russian ships to ports of the member countries of the EU came into force, a decision that is part of a recent extension, the fifth, of the sanctions that the bloc imposed on Russia for the invasion of Ukraine.

The governments of Bulgaria, Estonia and Belgium announced from the ban on Russian ships entering their ports and the provision of services to any Russian-flagged ship.

Italy had already issued a similar order yesterday.

However, the ports of the bloc countries will continue to accept Russian ships carrying gas and oil, as well as pharmaceutical, medical and agricultural production, including wheat.

In addition, entry will be allowed for humanitarian reasons, and the unloading of coal can take place until August 10, 2022, according to a note published today by the Bulgarian government.
