The Italian embassy reopened on Monday after being relocated from Kyiv to western Lviv in March for security reasons, consistent sources said. Spain will also reopen its embassy “soon”, announced Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
“Token of Commitment”
“We will reopen the Spanish embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine in the coming days as a further sign of the Spanish government’s and Spanish society’s commitment to the Ukrainian people,” Sanchez said in an interview with broadcaster Antena 3. Spain had its embassy staff brought to Poland shortly after the Russian invasion.
Italy’s Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said on Friday that the ambassador in Kyiv had arrived and that the Italian representation would be “fully operational again from Monday”. “It’s a symbol of an Italy that doesn’t waste time, that doesn’t stop believing in diplomacy and constantly seeks peace,” he added.
Both countries, like many others, closed their embassies in Kyiv after the Russian invasion of Ukraine due to the security situation. Recently, however, more and more countries have decided to return to Kyiv. Turkey moved its embassy in Ukraine back to Kyiv. France also announced last week that it would relocate its representation from Lviv to Kyiv. According to the Federal Foreign Office, the German embassy in Kyiv is currently vacant.
