Art for refugees: “We want to make the world a little more colorful”

Around 85 people who fled Ukraine are currently living in the Red Cross emergency quarters in the former postal distribution center in Linz. The massive halls offer more than enough space for the kids to play soccer and run around. Alone: Until two days ago, the industrial building was pretty gray.

Nine graffiti artists from Austria and Germany have put an end to this. They created five murals in bright colors on the walls in front of the accommodation, which should enliven the area.

“People come to us with scars on their souls caused by fleeing. We hope that the art and the colors might be able to put a little smile on their lips,” says Paul Reinthaler, District Head of the Red Cross in Linz.

The campaign was initiated by a Facebook post from the Red Cross, which was looking for artists for the beautification campaign. The post was shared umpteen times on social media. “A friend wrote to me on Instagram and I was immediately enthusiastic about the idea,” says Benjamin Schindler.

The man from Graz, who has been active under the stage name “Size Two” since 2010, immediately networked with his colleagues. Together they organized sponsors for the required colors and worked out a concept for the overall work of art.

Each was assigned a color, Schindler was responsible for blue. The design was the responsibility of the individual: Schindler, for example, designed a paint spray can with a broadly grinning face. “We want to make the world a bit more colorful. I think it’s good to surround yourself with beautiful things,” says the 33-year-old.
