Lula announced that on May 7 he will launch his candidacy for president of Brazil

The announcement comes just days after the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB) formally proposed former Sao Paulo governor and political rival of the Workers’ Party (PT), Geraldo Alckmin, as Lula’s candidate for vice president. The formalization occurred through a letter addressed to the former president, in which the PSB indicates that “it wishes to contribute to the programmatic task inherent in the formation of a broad front in a productive and effective manner.”

Regarding the government proposals, Lula declared himself in favor of revising the labor legislation, under the commitment to uphold the rights won. “I was a union leader and I always fought against a labor reform that would destroy the rights won. Nobody wants to recover the past, but we want to build a modern labor relationship that respects the rights of workers,” he said.

In addition, he stated that one of his objectives will be the generation of employment. “Only employment gives dignity to the Brazilian family. There is nothing more sacred than working and with the sweat of your blood bringing home the sustenance of your family. When I was president we generated 22 million formal jobs and Social Security had a surplus “said.

Following this line, he stressed that to build an industrial country “it is necessary to invest in science and technology” and “in education.” But unlike his government, when technical schools were created in multiple cities, Lula affirmed that today the scenario is different “because there is no longer any investment.”

In parallel, the PT confirmed this Tuesday a four-year pact to form an electoral and government federation with the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) and the Green Party, which will be the initial basis of support for the presidential formula of former President Luiz Inácio. Lula da SIlva accompanied as deputy by the former governor.

“This April 18 is a historic milestone in Brazilian political life. The Brazilian Federation of Hope (FE Brasil) is born,” says a PT statement released Monday after an agreement between the heads of the three forces.

Due to the new electoral legislation, the FE Brasil must act as a single party with internal debate and with commitments that last the four years of management in case former president Lula, of the PT, is elected on October 2 in the general elections.

The Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB), which will lead the former governor Alckmin as Lula’s deputy, he did not join the federation proposed by the PT due to the fact that there are regional dissidences, although it will be a mostly pro-government force.

According to the statement, the Brazil Federation of Hope (FE Brasil) “was established as an expression of the need and desire for the union of popular, democratic and progressive forces to, together with a broad alliance, restore democracy, promote the reconstruction and transformation of Brazil and guarantee a dignified life for the Brazilian people”.

“We dare, building a new tool, innovating and renewing the way of doing politics, betting on unity and convergence around ideals and high commitments to our country,” he says.

The letter is signed by the head of the PT, Gleisi Hoffmann, the head of the PCdoB, Luciana Santos, and the head of the Green Party, José Luiz Penna.

“FE Brasil is challenged with a great responsibility: to act as a decisive force to liberate our country from the nefarious government of the extreme right. Faced with this gigantic task, the Federation must, under the leadership of former President Lula, add, gather and mobilize broad political, social, economic and cultural forces so that the people and democracy triumph in the October elections,” the statement said.
