While restaurants and shops often have leftover food, consumers are currently groaning under the rising food prices. This mainly affects households with low incomes, he said International Monetary Fund (IMF) clear in its forecast yesterday. Many consumers can no longer even afford standard goods because housing and fuel costs eat up household budgets. It is the high cost of energy and raw materials that drives prices up. A quarter kilo of butter now costs more than 2.50 euros.
There are plenty of ways to save money when shopping for groceries. One was created with the “Too Good To Go” app. It helps to keep perfect food from the dustbin by having companies pack their surplus food in bags and offer it on the app. Users are shown where and when something can be picked up. In Germany, the system has already been tested for two and a half years. “Things are going very well in Upper Austria, along with Vienna and Lower Austria, we have the most partners here,” says Stefanie Krenn from “Too Good To Go”. More than 90 percent of the goods offered were sold. “That is very high compared to other federal states.”
545 local businesses – including bakeries, restaurants, cafés, hotels and supermarkets such as Spar and Hofer – are partners of the app. The natural bakery Honeder is also one of them and speaks of a “huge success”. It works the same everywhere: users can reserve a surprise bag and buy it in the evening before the store closes. “A portion always costs a third of the original price. For example, you can get groceries worth 15 euros for 4.99 euros,” says Krenn. Since the start of Upper Austria in October 2019, around 430,000 such bags have been sold. In Linz, where 130 companies are currently active, there were 170,000 so far.
