In the 2022/23 season, the acting section in particular will come up with many tried-and-tested plays. Among other things, Frank Wedekind’s “Lulu” (from September 17), Kafka’s “The Trial” (from September 23) or “What you want” by Shakespeare (from January 28, 2023) can be seen. But there will be a premiere with “Alice disappears” (from December 4th) by the two Bernhard scholarship holders Selma Mater and Marie Lucienne Verse. Hauptmann’s “Before Sunrise” will be shown from February 18, 2023 in a version by the author Ewald Palmetshofer from Königswiesen. The high percentage of women directing is striking: 9 out of 13 productions will be directed by women.
In the opera category, Korngold’s “Die tote Stadt” (from September 24) and Wagner’s “Meistersinger von Nürnberg” (from April 8, 2023) stand out. Kalman’s “Countess Mariza” (from October 22nd) will be offered as an operetta.
The motto of the season according to “Timeless”, as Artistic Director Hermann Schneider explained at the presentation on Wednesday: “We are suffering from a loss of time in view of the pandemic. The task of art is not necessarily to give answers, but to ask the right questions.”
Financially, the theater is 240,000 euros below plan in the current season due to the pandemic. “We had the second best start in theater history, but the months from January to March were the most difficult of the pandemic,” says commercial director Thomas Königstorfer. The season is characterized by strong ups and downs in the interest of the public. The crowd is now increasing again.
