El Salvador passes a controversial law to build prisons in the midst of its war on gangs

The last change was the approval of the Special Law for the Construction of Penitentiary Centers, according to which the Ministry of Public Works will assume the projection of new prisons with a system that contemplates the expropriation of land. Companies will not be obliged to submit to all the requirements of the law that regulates contracts with the State and, in addition, they will benefit from tax exemptions.

The Government, which did not clarify where these new prisons will be built, had opted in 2021 to demolish prisons to build other infrastructures of social interestbut has ended up changing his mind after the number of detainees has skyrocketed in recent weeks.

The document, endorsed by deputies from the ruling Nuevas Ideas party, raises the need to build new prisons in El Salvador to avoid overcrowding and maintain “adequate conditions” for inmates, according to the newspaper ‘La Prensa Gráfica’.

Bukele has applied a firm hand policy with the gangs and, despite the doubts generated in the UN and in other organizations that defend Human Rights, he has warned that he will continue along this same line. In recent days, he has argued that El Salvador has experienced “the safest Holy Week in all of history.”
