President Ersin Tatar accepted the resignation request on Wednesday, the state broadcaster BRT reported. According to the report, Prime Minister Faiz Sucuoglu previously wanted to change the cabinet and called for the sacking of Finance Minister Sunat Atun. President Tatar did not accept this, whereupon Sucuoglu submitted the resignation of the government.
Nicosia/Lefkosa. The government of the National Unity Party (UBP), the Democratic Party (DP) and the Rebirth Party (YDP) was only formed at the end of February. In January, President Tatar’s UBP emerged as the strongest party in early elections, but failed to secure an absolute majority. UBP is close to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and advocates a two-state solution for the divided island.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 after a Greek coup and Turkish military intervention. The northern part of the island is only recognized as a state by Turkey and is heavily dependent on Ankara. The Republic of Cyprus, whose government controls the southern part, has been part of the European Union since 2004.
