There are already more than 5 million refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine

Most crossed into the European Union through border points in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania, where volunteers and governments have rushed to help the refugees, mostly women and children, find jobs, shelter and provide support.

“When you look at the number of refugees in Central Europe, the number is unprecedented,” said Jakub Andrle, Migration Program Coordinator for People in Need, a Prague-based aid group operating in Ukraine.

“It is also important to remember that the numbers can increase rapidly from one day to the next depending on the situation on the ground,” he added.

Russia launched on February 24 what it calls a “special military operation” to demilitarize and “denazify” Ukraine. kyiv and its Western allies dismiss it as a false pretext. Russia has denied using banned weapons or attacking civilians.

More than half of the refugees entered the EU through Poland, where many had relatives and other connections living in the region’s largest pre-war Ukrainian community.
