US Secret Service shot dead intruder at home of Peruvian ambassador

Oswaldo de Rivero, the Peruvian ambassador, and his family were in the house at the time, but neither they nor their staff were injured, said Rodolfo Pereira, a press officer for the Peruvian embassy.

Secret Service uniformed officers responded to a report of a robbery in progress shortly before 8 a.m. in the eastern United States (1200 GMT), Washington Police Chief Robert Contee said. They found a man in his 20s and 30s carrying a metal stake at the back of the house, where several windows were broken.

Officers initially tried to stop the man with stun guns, but when he approached with the metal stake, they began shooting, killing him, Contee said. Two officers fired their weapons, he added.

The Embassy of Peru confirmed that there was damage to the property, but did not offer more details than the police account.

The man was not identified and it was not clear if he knew the house belonged to a foreign diplomat.

“We don’t see these kinds of incidents around here,” Contee said. “This is totally out of the ordinary.”
