Holocaust survivors die in Mariupol

“At the age of ten, Wanda Semjonowa Objedkowa survived the Germans by hiding in a basement in Mariupol. 81 years later she died in a basement in the same city while hiding from the Russians as a result of the terrible war,” Auschwitz said Museum on his Twitter channel.

The news of the woman’s death broke on social media on Wednesday. Objedkowa died on April 4th. Her daughter Larissa said she and her husband then had to bury the 91-year-old in a city park while the city was being bombed. The couple was then able to flee Mariupol. Much of the news from the city reaches the public with a delay because there is no internet there and those who have been rescued can only communicate with the outside world again in a safe place.

Objedkowa was born in Mariupol on December 8, 1930 and was ten when, after the Wehrmacht entered Mariupol, the SS rounded up the Jewish population there in order to murder them on the outskirts of the city. It is estimated that between 9,000 and 16,000 Jews were killed, including Objedkowa’s mother. Little Wanda survived the Nazi raid by hiding in a basement. When she was later discovered, family friends were able to convince the SS that the girl was of Greek descent. The child was thus saved from being shot.
