Mauthausen: Russian ambassador “disappointed”

Late in the evening yesterday, the Russian ambassador reacted to his invitation from the liberation ceremony in Mauthausen on May 15 by the organizers. “Regardless of the considerations of the political conjuncture in the West, we are deeply disappointed with this decision,” the embassy statement said. The Embassy wrote that the culture of historical remembrance was valued in Austria – in the past tense.

The Belarusian ambassador was also asked not to take part in the celebration with a commemorative procession. The decision was made because of the Russian war against Ukraine. “Participation by both countries would be incompatible with the Mauthausen oath of the surviving prisoners and their desire for peace and freedom,” said the chairman of the Mauthausen Committee Austria, Willi Mernyi, on Tuesday.
