Neighbor became violent because the children’s birthday party was too loud

A 25-year-old is said to have armed himself with pipe wrenches and a screwdriver and, with three accomplices, attacked a large family whose apartment is directly below his. Four people – including even the grandmother of the affected family – were injured, the father of the birthday boy seriously.

The violent neighborhood dispute took place on November 8, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. in a residential building on Hasengasse in Favoriten. Nine adults and eleven children celebrated a girl’s eleventh birthday in an apartment. There was a lot going on, and music was played. At some point it was enough for the man in the rooms above. He went downstairs, knocked on the door and told the 11-year-old’s father to be quiet and turn the music down, giving a two-minute deadline.

Back in his apartment, he found that his request had fallen on deaf ears. That “enraged” the man, the prosecutor explained. He “reinforced” himself with three friends whom he had called over the phone, armed himself with tools and put an abrupt end to the exuberant celebration by attacking family members , which showed up as he banged on the door again.

The eleven-year-old’s father was beaten with pliers and stabbed with a screwdriver before being thrown down the stairwell. “He was massacred,” the public prosecutor put it somewhat popularly. Among other things, the girl’s father broke a wrist bone. Another family member was stabbed in the left palm with a screwdriver and a third was concussed with a pipe wrench. Grandma received a punch.

The 25-year-old pleaded not guilty and spoke of a mix-up. At the time of the crime, he no longer lived above his family, but lived in Switzerland, where he earned money as a painter. The attacked family must have confused him with his sister’s boyfriend, who had taken over his apartment. Defense attorney Philipp Winkler announced a number of requests for evidence on this subject right at the beginning of the hearing. The eleven-year-old’s father, who was the first witness to be questioned, clearly recognized the violent neighbor in the 25-year-old.

Also accused was one of the three accomplices, who, unlike the other two, could be investigated because he had lost his cap at the scene of the crime in the heat of the moment. A DNA report was used to track down the four-times convict. The 26-year-old now explained that he had been ordered by an acquaintance to the address and immediately got into an argument in the stairwell. “He also got involved. But he had no knowledge that weapons were involved,” said his defender Florian Kreiner. The 26-year-old claimed he did not know anyone involved in the brawl apart from his acquaintance, whose first name he only knew. He did not see the main defendant there.
