After Holm was initially successful in the music film, she made her debut in 1957 as Helen in Oscar Straus’ “Walzertraum” at the Volksoper with great success. In 1960 she engaged Herbert von Karajan for her first appearance at the Vienna State Opera as Gretchen in “Wildschütz”, in 1964 she became a member of the ensemble. In 1961 she made her debut at the Salzburg Festival as Papagena in The Magic Flute. Ultimately, Holm’s repertoire spanned from the operetta and the Wienerlied to Mozart, Rossini, Verdi and Puccini to Richard Strauss. In 1987 the singer took on a speaking role for the first time at the Theater am Kurfürstendamm in Berlin. In 1989 she appeared in Lina Wertmüller’s “Love and Magic in Mamma’s Kitchen” at the Vienna Volkstheater.
For her work, Renate Holm received, among other things, the Golden Ring of Honor of the Vienna State Opera (1986) and the Medal of Honor in Gold of the City of Vienna (1987), the Robert Stolz Ring of Honor, the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art 1st Class, the Golden Medal of Honor for services to the state of Vienna and the German Federal Cross of Merit.
