The Peruvian government proposes to punish child rapists with chemical castration

He also indicated that the government expects those who violate minors to serve prison sentences and be chemically castrated at the end of their sentences.

The move comes after a 48-year-old man was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of raping the three-year-old girl, who had to undergo surgery as a result of the injuries caused.

President Pedro Castillo, a socially conservative former school teacher, has supported the bill, stating that people who rape minors in Peru must be punished in an exemplary manner.

To become law, the bill will have to go through the Congress, controlled by the opposition. Conservatives make up the majority of lawmakers, including some who have made an alternative proposal to include the death penalty as a punishment for the rape of a minor.

The chemical castration proposal was criticized by the Minister of Health, Jorge López, as well as by the parents of the victim and by women’s rights organizations.

“We regret that the Executive does not understand sexual violence,” the women’s rights group Flora Tristán said on Twitter. “Measures are needed to speed up judicial processes, to improve attention, to fight against impunity and strengthen prevention.”
