Mexico closed an anti-drug unit that worked with the US because the narco infiltrated

The closure complicates US efforts to combat criminal gangs inside Mexico, one of the epicenters of the multibillion-dollar global drug trade, and makes it harder to capture and pursue drug kingpins, security experts say.

In his daily press conference, López Obrador explained that the unit was closed “more than a year ago” and that cooperation with international security organizations continues, as long as the sovereignty of his country is respected.

“That group, which was supposed to be of a very high strategic level, was infiltrated (by criminals) and its leaders are being investigated and there are prisoners,” he said.

The president added that he had put order in Mexico’s relations with the United States and reiterated his complaints that previous administrations had allowed these ties to violate national sovereignty. “Not anymore,” he remarked.

The closed police unit worked on important cases such as the capture in 2016 of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmanbut his reputation suffered when a former boss was arrested in 2017 and pleaded guilty in a US court to taking bribes to leak tips to a drug gang.
