The number represents a rise with respect to the balance disclosed on April 5, when the United Nations agency estimated the number of internally displaced persons at 7.1 million. “Women and children, the elderly and people with disabilities have been disproportionately affected and represent a highly vulnerable group”remarked the director general of the IOM, Antonio Vitorinoreported the AFP news agency.
The Russian offensive launched on February 24 caused the flight of millions of people from their homes in Ukraineincluding 5 million who left the country. The third survey, carried out by the IOM between April 11 and 17, showed that until the last Sunday 7,707,000 people had been displaced within Ukraine and a 60% are women.

According to estimates, about 3.47 million people fled from the eastern part of the country, 1.77 million from the north and 1.46 million left the kyiv region. Furthermore, currently a 37% of the displaced are in relatively safe in the west of the country.
The assessment also noted that, as of Sunday, about 2.7 million people returned to their homesafter being absent for a minimum of two weeks. However, despite having returned, a 29% of returnees perceive their current place of residence as unsafe while alone 8.5% feel completely safe.
