British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has to face a parliamentary inquiry into the affair surrounding illegal celebrations at his official residence during the Corona curfews in 2020 and 2021. A Labor opposition motion to this effect was passed by MPs yesterday after a lengthy debate without a vote.
The central question is whether Johnson lied to MPs about the affair. The Prime Minister had repeatedly asserted in Parliament that the rules had always been followed. It later emerged that the Prime Minister himself had attended several of the meetings.
In the meantime, he had to pay a fine imposed by the police. In mid-April, Scotland Yard imposed fines on him, his wife Carrie and his finance minister Rishi Sunak for violating the corona requirements. Her investigations into the case are ongoing, and further fines against Johnson could follow.
In the UK, lying to Parliament is considered a reason for members of government to resign. If the committee finds that Johnson lied, it would be extremely sensitive.
