“The loss or damage caused by Trivago’s violations was significant. It resulted from consumers booking an expensive top-position offer when they could have obtained a room at the same hotel at a lower rate,” the ruling said on Friday.

In January 2020, at the request of the Australian Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (ACCC), the court found that the German company, founded in 2005, had violated Australian consumer law: the search engine used an algorithm in order not to – unlike in advertisements and on the Website claims – to highlight the cheapest prices for consumers, but those from which the company got the highest commissions.
