After it became known on Tuesday that many more people in Austria had died from or with Corona, the numbers from the federal states are now being reported successively, but none of them have fully made it through. According to the ministry, 959 deaths were added from Thursday to Friday. According to current figures, there have been 18,016 deaths since the pandemic began. The numbers should finally be recorded in the coming days, it said.
The total number of deaths continued to differ from those on the Agency for Health and Food Security (AGES) dashboard. 19,402 deaths had already been reported there on Friday afternoon, which is 1,386 more cases.
8,155 new infections
Within 24 hours, 8,155 new corona infections were reported by the Ministry of Health and the Interior. That’s above the seven-day average of 7,957. Last Friday there were 9,790 new cases. The seven-day incidence in Austria was 620.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, the day before it was 638.5.
The federal state with the highest seven-day incidence is currently Burgenland with 1,145.1, followed by Lower Austria with 817.7, Vienna with 754.9 and Vorarlberg with 552.3. Then come Upper Austria (533), Carinthia (495.1), Salzburg (474), Styria (426.2) and Tyrol (362.7).

Positive rate down
Even if far fewer tests are carried out than before the limitation, the positive rate has continued to fall. Currently, 3.3 percent of people got a positive result after a PCR test, which is below the weekly average of 4.2 percent. A total of 259,644 PCR and antigen rapid tests were registered in the past 24 hours. Most of them – namely 247,375 – were meaningful PCR tests. Almost 235 million tests have been carried out since the pandemic began. Almost 4.1 million people in Austria have contracted SARS-CoV-2. Almost four million have recovered from it.
The effective number of reproductions has increased again compared to last week. According to this week’s update from AGES and TU Graz, it is 0.82. This means that, statistically speaking, 100 infected people will infect 82 other people with SARS-CoV-2. A week ago the R number was 0.76, before that it was 0.78.
Situation in hospitals is easing
The situation in the hospitals has also eased further. There are currently 1,627 people with a corona infection in the hospital, 77 fewer than on Thursday. 127 people need intensive medical care. That number dropped by three since yesterday and is down by 47 patients in a week.
Compared to last week, the number of vaccinations has stagnated. 3,708 vaccinations were carried out on Thursday. Of these, only 150 were first stitches, 470 were second stitches and 3,088 were third stitches. According to the data from the e-vaccination pass, a total of 6.8 million people in Austria have received at least one vaccination. That is 75.9 percent of the population. 6.1 million people and thus 68.5 percent of Austrians have valid vaccination protection.
The protection rate (valid vaccination certificate) is highest in Burgenland at 74.8 percent. In Lower Austria, 70.7 percent of the population has a valid vaccination protection, in Styria 69.2 percent. After Vienna (67.5), Tyrol (66.4), Carinthia (65.3), Salzburg (64.6) and Vorarlberg (64.4), Upper Austria brings up the rear with 64.1 percent.
