In September 2020, a Court of Cassation of the CNJ ratified the sentence of eight years in prison, issued in first and second instance, against Correa; his vice president, Jorge Glasseveral government officials and private businessmen, in the case known as “Bribes 2012-2016”.

Saquicela said that the process will be sent immediately to the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry so that it informs Belgiumhis wife’s country of origin, where the former president resides.

Correa immediately reacted to the announcement on his Twitter social network account.

“I think it’s the fourth time. I hope they also publish Belgium’s response. Clown!” the former president wrote.

During the trial, Correa was accused of being the head of the criminal structure that received bribes from private businessmen to finance the campaigns of the ruling Alianza País party.

According to the Nation’s prosecutor, Diana Salazar, between 2012 and 2016 this criminal structure collected an amount greater than 7.5 million dollars.

The former president has insistently denied the charges and has declared himself politically persecuted.

According to Ecuadorian legislation, the crime of bribery does not prescribe.

In September 2020, the Court of Cassation of the National Court of Ecuador, the highest instance of ordinary justice in the country, rejected an appeal filed by Correa and confirmed his sentence for corruption to eight years in prison and 25 years of disqualification from holding office. which made it legally impossible for him to stand as a candidate in the general elections of February 2021 in which the current president prevailed, William Lasso.
