Trump bribed NATO members to protect them from Russia

Although NATO’s Article 5 clause requires members to come to the defense of any of their members who are under military attack, Trump said he did not feel obligated because of differences in input among members.

“They asked me, one of the presidents… ‘does that mean you won’t protect us in case we don’t pay, won’t you protect us from Russia?’… I said, ‘that’s exactly what that means,'” Trump said, adding that the media had not intentionally broadcast his threat at the time.

Both during his 2016 election campaign and from the White House, Trump often publicly attacked the transatlantic military alliance, the geopolitical heart of the West since World War II. which he described as a group of countries that live off the generosity of the United States.

Trump, who often describes himself as a great negotiator, told the Heritage Foundation with a laugh that he was bluffing to win concessions from allies, according to comments carried by the conservative outlet RSBN.

According to the former president, his threat had an effect because “the money began to come in” from the other NATO members.

Trump was frequently accused of having a deferential attitude towards the president of Russia, Vladimir Putinwhose invasion of Ukraine – which is not a member of NATO – on February 24 provoked a massive response from the United States and its European allies with military aid to that country and a battery of economic sanctions against Moscow.
