Tourists bathed in the Trevi Fountain in Rome: 1,000 euros fine

The 30-year-old climbed into Rome’s top attraction on Friday afternoon, the police confirmed. They hoped not to be seen by the police guarding the baroque monument in the hustle and bustle of tourists gathered at the fountain.

The fountain, which became world-famous for Anita Ekberg’s nocturnal bath in the classic film “La Dolce Vita”, is used again and again for self-portrayal. The city is trying to protect the attraction from bathers with heavy fines. Before the pandemic, the fountain was one of the most popular monuments in the world, with three million visitors a year.

The Trevi Fountain has experienced a boom, especially since the restoration, which was completed in November 2015. Also thanks to the new lighting, the figures come into their own very well. 100 LED lamps have been positioned at strategic points to highlight the artistic structure in all its glory. The restoration work on the masterpiece by the Italian architect Nicolo Salvi (1697-1751) took almost two years.
