a supreme judge said that the Armed Forces are being directed against the elections

“They are being kindly invited to participate in the process, they are being directed to attack the process and try to discredit it,” the judge added, according to the Europa Press news agency.

Barroso urged the military to avoid this “contamination” and argued that Brazil is one of the countries that demonstrates the rise of authoritarian populism.

He cited as examples of this the “intimidating” parade of combat vehicles through the Esplanade of the Ministries, in Brasilia, and the repeated “unfounded and fraudulent” attacks by President Jair Bolsonaro on the electoral process.

The magistrate stressed that in the 37 years that have passed since the recovery of democracy “the Armed Forces have regained their prestige” but warned that now “there is a real risk due to the politicization effort of the military.”

“I have the firm hope that the Armed Forces do not allow themselves to be seduced by this effort so that they play in the universe of the bonfire of political passions,” he stressed.

Brazil will hold general elections on October 2. Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva leads Bolsonaro in the voting intention polls for the Presidency.
