Macron thanked the support to curb the extreme right and promised to be the president of all

“From now on I am no longer the candidate of one sector but the president of all,” Macron said in his first speech after learning the preliminary results of the elections, which guarantee him a new five-year term.

On the Champ de Mars, with the Eiffel Tower in the background, the head of state promised a “renewed method” to govern the country after a first term marked by protests, according to the AFP and Europa Press news agencies.

The president admitted “the anger and the disagreements” that led millions of French people to vote for the National Rally, the far-right force that for the first time gathered more than 40% of the vote.

In the last elections, in 2017, Macron and Le Pen also faced each other in the second round, but then the current centrist leader obtained 66.1% of the votes and the far-right leader received less than 35%.

In his speech tonight, Macron acknowledged that France went through “painful” and “difficult” moments in a period of “transformation”, and assured that the next mandate will not simply be a “continuity” of the current one.

“We have a lot to do, the war in Ukraine is there to remind us that we are going through tragic times in which France must show the clarity of its voice and develop its strength in all areas,” he said.

He thanked those who voted for him only to “block” the eventual access of the extreme right to the government and even those who abstained from voting, to whose “silence” he promised to “respond”.

Macron was re-elected today with 58.2% of the valid votes, according to known exit polls as soon as the voting centers closed.

Le Pen immediately acknowledged her defeat, even before Macron delivered his message, although she maintained that the result represents “a brilliant victory” for her and anticipated that she will continue to carry out her “commitment to France and the French.”
